A pterygium is a fleshy overgrowth of the conjunctiva caused by excessive or prolonged ultraviolet exposure.

A pterygium is a fleshy overgrowth of the conjunctiva that may affect one or both eyes. It is a pink colored growth that starts on the clear tissue of the eye called conjunctiva. It is caused by excessive or prolonged ultraviolet exposure. Pterygia are extremely common in Queensland more common in the northern and western parts of the state.

Pterygium surgery

Pterygia are often present for many years and can both be unsightly and irritating. In the early stages simple lubrication may be enough to settle symptoms, however if they threaten to cover the centre of your vision, then surgery is necessary.

Pterygium surgery

Modern pterygium surgery is aimed at reducing the recurrence rate as much as possible whilst also obtaining an excellent cosmetic result.

Dr Horsburgh is very familiar with microsurgical techniques to remove the pterygium and secure an auto conjunctival graft to ensure that the risk of recurrence is extremely small. Conjunctival grafting is essential to ensure that the risk of recurrence is diminished as much as possible.
