About Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve. The optic nerve sends visual information from your eye to your brain and is vital for good vision. Damage to the optic nerve is often related to high pressure in your eye. Most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain.

Glaucoma treatment

Treatment aims at reducing the intraocular pressure and preventing further damage to the optic nerves. Intraocular pressure can be reduced by increasing the drainage of aqueous fluid or reducing its production through medications.

Laser treatment can help treat some types of glaucoma. It’s a procedure that Dr Horsburgh can perform in the rooms. It works by helping the fluid in your eye drain, which can help lower the pressure inside your eye. A laser treatment called trabeculoplasty is used to treat open-angle glaucoma.

Over the last few years, implantable devices, such as iStent and others, have been developed to enhance aqueous drainage; to lower the pressure. These devices can be inserted in combination with cataract surgery or alone.

Surgery is performed if medication does not work. Trabeculectomy is a conventional surgery for glaucoma done to remove the accumulated fluid.
